Gyula Grosics

Gyula Grosics who was the Hungarian goal keeper in the 6-3 victory over England in 1953 served in ,,Hunyadi" in 1944/1945 and returned to Hungary in August 1945.

At the end of the war with the members of the  ,,Hunyadi" division being in Austria, attempts where made by the new Hungarian government to try and get them to return to Hungary. This met with little success as the Hungarian Supreme People's Court had  announced that "the SS Hunyadi panzergrenadiers" were all war criminals and they were sentenced in their absence. The communist party then had another attempt to get the members of the ,,Hunyadi" division back. They turned up with blank communist party books stating that if the person joined the party then the Peoples court would not persecute them. A large number of people took this advice and returned to Hungary (especially former members of the Arrow Cross who's families had stayed behind in Hungary).

A veteran recollects that during training members of ,,Hunyadi" used to march and sing a song. The German soldiers would cheer them on not knowing what the words of the song meant. Apprently the lyrics talked about a seagull flying over a ship and crapping on it.

"March of the SS division Hunyadi" available on the Internet is actually Franz Lehár's "Piave-Marsch" or the  "106 Regimentsmarsch" and has no connection with the 25 SS Division ,,Hunyadi"

1 This list is from a several sources and the names and dates are compiled from them. Please note that most ranks in the divisional staff had a German “shadow” to allow the Germans some command over the Hungarian divisions

2 One source lists this Regiment as being called ,,Julius Gombos”.

3    There were plans to use the 13th and 25th Hungarian Assault Artillery as the core for the anti tank battalions of 25 SS "Hunyadi" & 26 SS "Hungaria"

4 There was a plan to form a Hungarian Flak Regiment from the flak units of the 25th and 26th divisions. This would have been under XVII. Waffen Army Corps der SS (Ungarische). It was to be commanded by Standartenfuhrer Eugen Brenner

5 Julius Feyer is mentioned in one source but this may just be an error as he is also listed as adjutant in others.
